| The unique design problems which helicopters produce are many and complex. Through practical examples and illustrated case studies, supported by all the relevant theory, this primer text provides an accessible introduction which guides the reader through the theory, design, construction and operation of helicopters. Fundamental performance and control equations are developed, from which the book explores the rotor aerodynamic and dynamic characteristics of helicopters. Example calculations and performance predictions, reflecting current practice, show how to assess the feasibility of a design. * Tackles the theory, design, construction and operation of helicopters * Illustrated with many practical examples and case studies * Provides the fundamental equations describing performance and dynamic behaviour | |||||||

| HELICOPTER FLIGHT DYNAMICS, SECOND EDITION THE THEORY AND APPLICATION OF FLYING QUALITIES AND SIMULATION MODELING | |||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| |||||||
| The behavior of helicopters is so complex that understanding the physical mechanism at work in trim, stability and response, and thus the prediction of flying qualities, requires a framework of analytical and numerical modeling and simulation. Good flying qualities are vital for ensuring that mission performance is achievable with safety and, in the first edition of Helicopter Flight Dynamics, a comprehensive treatment of design criteria was presented. In the seond edition, the author complements this a new chapter on degraded flying qualities, drawing examples from flight in poor visibility, failure of control functions, and encounters with severe atmospheric disturbances. Fully embracing the the consequences of degraded flying qualities during the design phase will contribute positively to safety. Te accurate prediction and assessment of flying qualities draws on modeling and simulation discipline on the one hand and testing methodologies on the other. Checking predictions in flight requires clearly defined" mission-task-elˇements," derived from missions with realistic performance requirements. High-Fidelity simulations also from the basis for the design of stability and control augmentation systems, essential for conferring level one flying qualities. The integrated description of flight dynamic modeling, simulation, and flying qualities forms the subject of this book, which will be of interest to engineers in research laboratories and manufacturing industry, test pilots, and flightd test engineers, and as a reference for graduate and psotgraduate students in aerospace engineering. CONTENTS: Introduction. helicopter Flight Dynamics- An Introductory Tour . Modeling Helicopter Flight Dynamics: Building a Simulation Model . Modeling Helicopter Flight Dynamics: Trim and Stability Analysis . Modeling Helicopter Flight Dynamics . Stability Under Constraint and Response Analysis . Flying Qualities: Objective Assessment and Criteria Development . Flying Qualities: Subjective Assessment and Other Topics .Flying Qualities: Forms of Degradation | |||||||

| INTRODUCTION TO HELICOPTER AND TILTROTOR FLIGHT SIMULATION | |||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| |||||||
| With many available text cover som aspects of simulation, this book is unique in that it brings all the tools required to write a flight simulation mathematical model together in one reference. The organization of the book makes it the perfect reference guide, as chapter after follows a logical build up to complete aircraft model. the book begins with a discussion that focuses the rader on the types og flight simulation that are possible. From there, chapters ar dedicated to vectors resolution and the many axis systems used in heicopter analysis. A brief chapter ana tmospheric modeling precedes a critical section devoted to the importance of establishing the distinction between inertial velocity, wash velocity and aerodynamic velocity. After these chapters have built the foundation for aerodynamics and dynamics, the rotocraft is modeled from simple components up to more complex systems with chapters dedicated to each of the following: fuselage, wings, propellers, rotors, engines, drive system, landing gear, controls, and aerodynamic coupling. The final chapters describe overall organization and informational flow, and methods to trim the aircraft to initial states. In all, the book holds 18 chapters and 12 appendices along with accompanying problem sets, a solutions manual, and demonstration programs on a CD-ROM. The demonstration programs written in Visual Basic, serve as a tie-in between chapters and offer a real asset to the reader. CONTENTS: Introduction to Flight Simulation of Helicopters and Tiltrotors.
